"Considering I've got a triathlon this weekend, it would be a good idea to get on my bike and ride." Replied me.
The best part about that ride with my sister, the moment she pulls out a pair of run shorts out of a jersey to give to me. "One problem Bree, where in the heck am I supposed to put those?" Laughing out loud literally we were. "Oh you don't have a jersey on?"
The last time I think I ever wore a jersey riding my bike was like in 2008 maybe 2007 when I actually thought triathlon could become my thing. So, NO I didn't have a jersey on...
40 minutes Easy Peasy |
Lavaman Waikoloa is by far one of the Greatest Olympic distance triathlons I've ever raced and I'm sure if you participated in it before, you will agree!
Whats not to love about the heat & salty air and Fun Fun Fun. And if one portion of the race is not your specialty, join in on a relay team and do your thing. Exactly what I chose to do this year when a friend asked me to bike & run for him because of an injury to his knee. When I offered to bike and run, I thought for sure I'd find the time to actually get outdoors and ride a little. Funny thing is and quite typical for me to tell you the truth, when it comes to triathlon, I don't seem to find the time to train. I didn't find the time to road ride all but two different occasions. One 25-30 miler by myself and the 40 minute ride I already mentioned to you with my sister. THAT'S IT!!!
Was I nervous? No.
I wasn't nervous because I'm comfortable on the bike and most definitely comfortable when running.
Once a week I teach an indoor cycling class, so I teach as though I'm riding on the road. I use what I've learned in the past, learned from other cyclists, and what I learned traveling cross country with Nick and Whistler. No I was not nervous, but those two rides on the road helped make me feel ready in some small way. I felt more secure with how I might ride and what kind of time frame I might finish. And a nice set of 3,000 dollar wheels sure where nice to borrow for the race. The wheels cost more than my 2006 Specialized Transition Triathlon bike that I bought when I first moved to the Island and still have today.
Me and my Specialized |
The morning of the race was actually quite exciting.Whistler and his cousin Kainoa were going to be on bike support duty with Nick while he worked the race course, so I knew that was going to be fun for the boys to be a part of. Nick had them under control and Bree and I could focus on racing. Good guy that Nick is, I know!

pre race with these guys |
Race morning was exciting as I always remembered it to be. Lots and lots of people scattered everywhere. All I really wanted was for my sister to have a great race day and for my relay team to do good too. I knew Rich was going to do great in the water as he is a swimmer. Once I began riding, I knew I felt pretty darn good and so I was looking to finish around the same bike time I always had finished when racing in the past. I wasn't quite sure if I had it in me to be faster, I wasn't sure what to expect with only two rides. Well
1:12:14 later, I was in transition getting ready to head out on the run. Holy Hell, my leg muscles were seriously freaking out. They were lacking the whole brick training. Oops!
Looking good but feeling out of whack (just came off the bike) |
I kept talking to my legs telling them it wasn't a marathon, so I needed them to just pull it together and get moving. I kept reminding my legs and myself it was only a 10k.
Onto the run and moving slower than normal, but I just accepted where my body was and ran with it. Around mile 3 of the run (also the turn around and downhill portion of the course) I began to feel my legs and picked up my pace (as so did everyone else I talked to at the race). That only lasted a short amount of time unfortunately. Still loving the race and the people around me I smiled a little. It was exciting to be in the midst of community and people is never met before.
Coming towards the finish line I tried to once again pick up my pace, but couldn't in the sand. Slow as a turtle and probably my slowest 10k in years, but I finished. Our relay team came in an overall 5th place for the Coed division, no podium no award. We were super Happy.... We just wanted to have fun and do the best we could and that's what we did.
